Colorado Kokanee Salmon RunOctober 03, 2016
Yes, we have salmon in Colorado! Kokanee are very similar to Sockeye Salmon. Several areas in Colorado have fall spawning runs of Kokanee coming out of the large reservoirs to the rivers much like their ocean going brethren. We went after them on the fly this past weekend and it was really cool! It's definitely different than trout though and you get the Kokanee to bite through a territorial or protective reaction from using flies like red eggs, red worms, and flashy red nymphs. The key seems to be the color RED! Larger red copper johns did the trick for me, fished in a dead drift and low to the bottom.
