Willowfly Anglers Spring 2017 Fishing Report April 24th

April 24, 2017

It’s Spring time in the Gunnison Valley which means temperatures are rising and so is the water level.

The Gunnison River has been sporadically blown out this week with warmer days producing dirty high water near 2,000 cfs -- and cooler days keeping the river that nice "Gunny Green" at around 1,000-1,500 cfs. Cooler temps in the forecast should make for good fishing on the soft edges with light colored streamers and stonefly nymphs.

The Taylor River is fishing best at the Catch and Release section below Taylor Dam. Most fish are eating midges in the 20-24 range. Mysis Shrimp, Eggs, and Floss Worms are also picking up some fish. Look for actively feeding fish OFF of the spawning beds. Beds are any area of lighter colored gravel where rainbows will pair to spawn this time of year. If you see this activity let those fish get it on in peace. If temperatures are on an upward trend be prepared to fish a dry / emerger rig with a size 22 Parachute BWO extended body and a Black Sparkle Wing RS2 22/24.
