Willowfly Anglers Fishing Report Summer 2016June 22, 2016
Summer conditions have arrived in the Gunnison Valley, which means the bugs are here and hatches are working their way up the Gunnison. The Gunnison is hovering around 2000 CFS and we expect it drop slowly from here. The Taylor River is back down to 300 CFS below the dam. The C&R has been fishing well and the rest of Taylor Canyon has been good midday through the afternoon.
Stonefly nymphs, PMD emergers, and caddis Pupa are your best bet on the Gunnison. The most productive float is from North Bridge to Wilson's Landing. The best walk/wade access is at Neversink & Cooper's Ranch. ATTN PRIVATE BOATERS: The Whitewater park has some big features at this level and is not recommended unless you are rigged for whitewater and understand the possibility of flipping your boat. Always wear a PFD and keep it buckled up and tightened during high water.
The Catch and Release section below Taylor Dam is fishing well with egg patterns, midge larva, and mysis shrimp imitations. Use a small of indicator as you can get away with to avoid spooking fish. 5x flourocarbon tippet is your best bet right now. Taylor canyon below the tailwater is picking up with more bugs but we expect a lot more bugs on the Taylor in the next 2 weeks. Expect to see evening caddis and some PMD's and drakes. Streamers have also been productive in the canyon at low-light times. Call the shop for the latest updates on flows and what to expect. Our shop is also fully stocked with 2016 flies, and gear so come check out whats new this year.
