Scandalously Enormous Rainbow TroutAugust 08, 2016
Tracking the plentiful rainbow trout through the San Juan River is an exciting past time. Many anglers hunt for fishing holes with the volume or the giant trout available in the San Juan River.
Walking toward the dam out of Texas Hole parking lot, we take a long look at the kiddie hole packed with anglers. Then we walk right through it without a second look. Around the first corner is a little pool with a great big rainbow trout just waiting to be caught. After speculating for a moment I throw a large dry fly, black and orange foam beetle, into the corner above the pool, wait for the swirl of color, and SET! Fish on. Fighting the little guy for about 10 minutes we get it to the net and its about 14 inches. Released to be caught again.
We trek on through the 403 cfs river to the slice of the river that belongs to nobody in particular. The pod of rainbow trout are still there. Hanging in the same basic location as last week. They seem to be less picky today. Chocolate foam wings and tiny black or gray midges have been working well. 22 for the foam wing and 24 for the midges. After stalking around the trout for a bit and hooking up a couple of the smaller guys we call it a day. We have to be back in the shop by 2pm today.
No Scandalously Enourmous Rainbow Trout today.
Until next time #fishthejuan
And the pic is a hook through the eye of a hook already in the trout
