Smallmouth Bass on Skated Flies

August 15, 2016

If you haven't chased Grand River Smallmouth Bass it should be on your places to fish bucket list. When Trout fishing slows down from the summer heat I am out chasing Smallies. These fish are hands down the hardest fighting fish in my river system next to Carp and they are plentiful and almost have the same characteristics as Trout do.

I am a fly only guy, I use both single and double handed rods. This time when I was out my rod of choice was my Echo Classic 11' 7wt switch rod with Rio Switch Chucker. Now you may think thats a bit over kill for Bass but.. I assure you most of these fish put a bend in the rod like a Steelhead would.

The type of rig I had setup was a dry line tapered mono leader right to the rust colored sculpin looking fly spun with deer hair. The fly was casted directly over some pretty turbulent water where you think bass wouldn't be sitting and it paid off amazingly.

If you are ever thinking about coming to Ontario to chase these fish shoot me an email and I will help you out as best as I can.

Tight lines,
