Its that time of year again for our most unpredictable of all the blue water fish. Here in Key West we encounter 2 or 3 runs of wahoo per year. We never know when these runs will occur or how long they will last. Not only are wahoo hard to predict when they will arrive and depart, they are also one of the hardest to land. Wahoo are the fastest fish in the ocean reaching speeds of 60 miles per hour. When hooked you can expect to hear that reel sing,as line is pulled out at an alarming rate. Just as quickly these escape artist will turn around and swim back at your boat at top speed shaking there heads the whole time. That is the main reason they they are so good at escaping. The angler assumes that the fish has escaped because of the slack line and rather then reel faster they stop reeling, giving the wahoo a perfect opportunity to shake the hook loose. So if you are ever out fishing and the mate yells WAHOO ON! be prepared to reel fast as soon as that line stops peeling off the reel. Your chances of out smarting the elusive wahoo will improve dramatically. Give us a call at Capt. Conch Charters to plan your fishing adventure.
