Willowfly Anglers Fishing Report Summer 2016 July 17thJuly 17, 2016
THREE RIVERS SUMMER 2016 FISHING REPORT
Summer conditions have arrived in the Gunnison Valley, which means hatches are working their way up the Gunnison, Taylor, and East Rivers. The Gunnison is hovering just over 700 cfs and we expect these flows to continue over the next week. The Taylor River is flowing 350 CFS below the dam. The C&R has been fishing well and the rest of Taylor Canyon has been good midday through the afternoon.
Dry Fly season is here. Morning Tricos, Midday Drakes, PMD’s, and Stones, and evening Caddis have all produced on the surface. The most productive float is from Almont to North Bridge. The best walk/wade access is at Neversink & Cooper’s Ranch.
The Catch and Release section below Taylor Dam is fishing well with Drake emergers, Drake dries, stonefly dries, midge larva, midge pupa, and mysis shrimp imitations. Use as small of an indicator as you can get away with to avoid spooking fish. 5x flourocarbon tippet is your best bet right now. Taylor Canyon from the Catch and Release downstream to Almont is buggy right now with Drakes, Caddis, Tricos, Stones, and some PMD’s. Expect those hatches to keep working upstream this week. Streamers have also been productive in the canyon at low-light times. Call the shop for the latest updates on flows and what to expect. Our shop is also fully stocked with 2016 flies, and gear so come check out whats new this year.
