Willowfly Anglers Fishing Report Summer 2016 August 7thAugust 07, 2016
The Gunnison bumped up to near 1,000 cfs with the rain this week but its now down to around 850 cfs and falling. The Taylor River is flowing 350 CFS below the dam. The C&R has been fishing great and the rest of Taylor Canyon has been good midday through the afternoon.
Fish are eating a smorgasbord of bugs this week. BWO’s, Stones, and midges are all producing. Cloudy days have been awesome streamer fishing. The most productive float is from Almont to North Bridge. The best walk/wade access is at Neversink & Cooper’s Ranch.
The Catch and Release section below Taylor Dam is fishing well with BWO emergers & dries, Drake emergers, stonefly nymphs, midge larva, midge pupa, and mysis shrimp imitations. Use as small of an indicator as you can get away with to avoid spooking fish. 5x flourocarbon tippet is your best bet right now. Taylor Canyon from the Catch and Release downstream to Almont is buggy right now with Drakes, Caddis, Tricos, Stones, and PMD’s. Expect those hatches to keep working upstream this week. Streamers have also been productive in the canyon at low-light times. Call the shop for the latest updates on flows and what to expect. Our shop is also fully stocked with 2016 flies, and gear so come check out whats new this year.
