It's that time of year. Steelhead, one of our favorite pursuits.
On Saturday, Sept. 30, we are joining Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. as one of many national daylong events to raise funds and awareness of injured and disabled veterans that have served in communities across America. We are donating 20% of our sales that day to the nonprofit. Learn more: http://ow.ly/lHEu30f9QWe
The Game Tip: When you see a trout rising that you want to catch, before you enter the water, determine what casting angle will give you the best and most efficient drag-free presentation. From a shop's perspective, we prefer if possible to position ourselves upstream of a rising trout, ideally at about a 20-30 degree angle. From this angle you can get the fly over a fish first and drag free with relative ease. Once you determine the best casting angle and begin to approach your target, enter the water as quietly as possible. Wade slowly, don’t drag your feet along the bottom and try not to push any waves from your wading over the trout as you get close. Don’t cast until you’re in position, and as we’ve mentioned before in prolific hatch situations, shotgunning is not a good approach to having success. As they say “look before you leap.”

We'd like to give a shout out to Alan, who has been a customer since 2010 and did his first guide trip with us this week. Alan is deaf and we used hand signals and lip reading during our trip. We had a great day, landed about 10 fish and went through some basic nymphing and dry fly techniques.

Always looking forward to fall fishing, but not ready to say goodbye to the summer sunsets just yet.

The Game Tip: By minimizing your physical footprint when fishing, you will improve your fishing success. Your wading has an impact on your fishing regardless of whether trout are rising or not. By limiting your wading you'll disturb fewer trout and leave opportunities for yourself and for others later on. In a hatch situation, you’ll find the smaller trout are the first to get going. The bigger trout will let those little guys do some early recon before they saunter into more shallow lies to take advantage of emerging insect hatches. Be patient. If you aren’t patient and allow the rivers' larger trout to get comfortable you’ll never get a shot at them with a dry fly. Wading around through a piece of water before things get going will not only move fish from the more shallow feeding lies they prefer, but you’ll pucker them up as well. Next time your on the water wade like the heron regardless of the techniques you prefer, not a buffalo.

It's rare that we don't find these two sisters, Janette and Janene Gull, with big smiles on their faces while hanging at our shop, with the Utah Women Flyfishers crew or on the water. Shop owner Steve Schmidt had the opportunity to spend some time on the water with them recently, and before they tried to find their way back to the parking lot very late, all had a great night fishing summer's prolific caddis hatch. Sorry all, no fish photos from the evening, everyone was too busy catching fish. You'll just have to believe our stories ...

Fiberglass isn't dead, and it's perfect for small stream fishing. If you haven't fished on a glass rod, come into the shop and give it a try. http://ow.ly/dvqx30eugpR
